Guide to keeping your last name after marriage?
I am planning on keeping my last name after I’m married, but I’m wondering what kinds of hassles (insurance, joint bank accounts, etc.) my husband and I should expect to face because of this choice. Is there a book out there???
Also, we will be moving to Oklahoma shortly after the wedding and I’m wondering if there are certain laws in that state regarding different names for married couples. Thanks!
It’s not nearly so complicated as to need a book. No states have laws that require you to change your name, so it’s your choice. My sister’s been married for 20 years and didn’t change her name. Never had any kind of serious problem about it. It sometimes creates a funny moment when people think her last name is also her husband’s last name. His first name is Brian. Her last name is Ryan, so some people think his name is Brian Ryan, which sounds funny. Our dad would introduce her as “Mrs. Jones”, which made her crazy. They’ve never had problems with finances, banks, insurance companies, house ownership, hospital admittance, travel, etc.
