OK $15.18 Talvin Singh first rose to notoriety running a popular Monday night London club, Anokha. That experience led to the release of the album Anokha: Soundz of the Asian Underground, a highly regarded sampling of Asian-esque sounds from artists who performed at Anokha. OK is Singh’s debut release, and it was nine months in the making. The title was chosen because of the universality of the word OK, which can be understood almost anywhere. It is mostly a reinterpretation of hypnotic Indian classical music with plenty of flute, sitar, and of course tabla. There’s also Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan-like devotional qawwali and traditional Okinawan dance music mixed in to make OK truly pan-Asian. Singh’s subtle craftsmanship in fitting the old with the modern make this album seductive and one of the best efforts yet at blending Asian sounds with techno. “Light,” a truly wondrous fusion of Indian flute and rich atmospherics, encapsulates what Singh is all about and should convince even the most skeptical. ~ Matthew Hilburn, Rovi Performers: Chintoo Singh – Rabab; Dhiren Raichura – MIDI Guitar; Guy Sigsworth – Distortion, Keyboards; Heat China – Sanshin; Madhukar Dhumal – Shenai; Rakesh Churasia – Sanshin; Archana – Choir, Chorus; Jyotsna Hardikar – Choir, Chorus; Madras Philharmonic Orchestra – Strings; Purinama Shah – Choir, Chorus; Sumati Antrolikat – Choir, Chorus; Vaijanthi-Limaye – Choir, Chorus; Ajay Naidu – Vocals; Aziz Abrahim – Guitar; Bill Laswell – Bass; Byron Wallace – Trumpet; Cleveland Watkiss – Vocals; Jon Klein – Guitar; |

Is It O.K. $11.18 Serena Ryder’s third album sounds less like Alanis Morissette than her previous releases. A stirring combination of folk and rock, “Is It O.K.” is a solid listen from start to finish, with highlights including “Sweeping the Ashes,” “Brand New Love,” and the Canadian hit singles “Weak in the Knees” (which actually does sound like Alanis) and “Little Bit of Red.” With this release, Ryder shows she has the chops to make it with the best of them — “Is It O.K.” won a Juno Award for Best Adult Contemporary Album in 2009 — and the talent to fit nicely in with the cream of the crop of the Canadian music scene. It also shows her as being one step closer to breaking through to the elusive American market, which this album proves she is very capable of doing. Ryder takes the rough approach she gave to folk on “If Your Memory Serves You Well” and the indie cred from her debut album, Unlikely Emergency, and whips up a sonic delicacy. A formidable talent. ~ Tomas Mureika, Rovi Performers: Zac Rae – Marxophone, Glockenspiel, Hammond B3, Organ (Hammond), Piano, Keyboards, Synthesizer; Lyle Workman – Guitar (Electric Baritone), Banjo, Mandolin, Guitar (12 String); David Bassett – Guitar (Acoustic); David Lee Bassett – Guitar (Acoustic); John Alagia – Vocals (Background), Guitar (Electric), Guitar (Acoustic), Percussion; Mark Goldenberg – Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric); Matt Chamberlain – Loops, Percussion, Drums; |

Be OK $8.78 When the Hotel Café became a nationally recognized launching pad for songwriters in 2008, Ingrid Michaelson stood out amongst artists who regularly played the venue, flaunting a confident sound that was a cut above the average female crooner. Her second indie album, Girls and Boys, made waves one year prior when it topped the iTunes charts, eventually selling over 740,000 copies of its lead single thanks to licensing deals with Old Navy and Grey’s Anatomy. Released in 2008, Be OK continues her Norah Jones-gone-pop approach with 11 tracks. This isn’t a proper studio effort — rather, it’s a benefit project (with proceeds going to cancer research) that takes its material from live performances, rarities, and several new tracks. Filled with handclaps and breezy guitar chords, the titular “Be OK” bookends the set list with two different versions — one filled with harmonies, keyboards, and percussion, and the other sticking closer to an acoustic arrangement. Michaelson’s voice is strong enough to carry those tracks alone, but her melodies sound strongest when flanked by harmonies, whether they’re provided by the singer’s own double-tracked voice or contributions from her touring bandmates. “The Chain,” a longtime live favorite and perhaps the best song on this disc, even careens into a three-person round, utilizing the harmony approach better than any Michaelson track since “The Way I Am.” She leads the pack, advising her ex-lover to “glide away on soapy heels” while her melodies are echoed by Bess Rogers and Allie Moss. It’s a simple song, but its presentation makes all the difference — a telltale sign of a songwriter who knows how to breathe new life into a veteran genre. ~ Andrew Leahey, Rovi Performers: Dan Romer – Accordion, Vocals, Percussion; Ingrid Michaelson – Vocals |
